Blacksmithing Tools and Techniques
John V. Hanson will present “Blacksmithing Tools and Techniques,” on March 26, at the Grundy County Historical Museum, 510 W. Illinois Avenue, in Morris. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and is free to the public. John V. Hanson is a local attorney who developed an interest is blacksmithing in the 1980’s because he wanted to forge knives, tools, and other pieces including flower pot racks and stands. He will explain, demonstrate and describe uses of the various tools at the Tool Shed in the Museum.
John V. Hanson has been blacksmithing for twenty – five years. Most of his work has been done by hand using 18th century techniques and with a minimum of power tools, grinders and modern equipment. He was mentored by Jim Publey of Northeastern Indiana, who taught college level courses at Williamsburg, VA, regarding American colonial technology. Publey taught John the process of converting a spent flat file into a knife, which was commonly done, including annealing shaping, hardening and tempering blades.
John’s work includes knife making, tool making, flower pot hangers and stands, and a hanging pot rack which graces his kitchen that has a 14 foot high ceiling.
John will discuss tools and fixtures commonly used by blacksmiths to shape hot metal, and some examples of his work.
